Queensland Roofing Choosing Colours

This is a video brought to you by Queensland Roofing, quality materials and quality tradesmen since 1978. This is a video just in relation to how to choose colours for your home and some of the technologies that we have available to do so.

Look in the top right hand corner, you see me about to click on Viola! A colour. This colour sampler gives me the ability to move between different colours and I have found that something people really enjoy doing is just looking at the different colours as a shuttle between different settings. So, whilst I can do this and this is available to you, we also do if you see there on the top right hand corner, we also have pre-programmed the COLORBOND® colours pre-selected, so all of your standard COLORBOND® colours, you know including heritage reds, wilderness, all the COLORBOND® colours. So, obviously this is we’re looking at sort of a re-roof here, but it does work for tile as well. So, once again playing around with some different, just some different ideas here with the colour for fun, but if that’s not enough, we can look at the house, the roller doors and you can see there just a change in colour and the difference that that makes to getting a visual perspective of what you would like. Led Nail Roof

Good day. David here from Queensland Roofing. If you have a led nail roof then this is probably what we’re going to find. The led nails very rarely will hold on into this day and age. Most of them will put on to galvanized roofs long time ago and in short we get situations now where they lift up. Look, you can see here, actually you probably can’t see, so I have to explain it, this is a hole where a led nail should be. The led nail is on the old roofs, they rust, they come out of the timber work and really there’s no point trying to pull them out and try to re-screw back in because most of the time around the screws is rusted. Not only that is most of the roofs that led nail are now so old, very rarely would you want to actually keep them.

A lot of them also double run roofs. What I mean by that is that the team does not go all the way from the top to the bottom. They are more so a roof where you may have only 2 or 3 meters and another 2 or 3 meters of the sheet on top, so you’ve got two sheets basically going from top to bottom, in between those two sheets because the water can’t get out fast enough you get rust and if you’re getting rust on the inside of the roof regardless of how much you paint it and trying to do things on the outside, the fact is the roof is falling apart around you.

So, if you don’t feel that that’s enough proof by getting on the roof and having a look, best way to do it is take the manhole out and shine the torch on the inside the roof and have a look at the sheet laps and when you shine the torch up inside the roof through the manhole or from what you see is the rust on the under lap of the sheet, so you’ve got the sheet on the top and the sheet going down the bottom, on that bottom sheet you can shine the torch up and look up into that sheet and see the rust from there. Hope that helps and that – look, in most situations, I got to admit that we would replace a led nail roof, more so than we would any other metal roof, if it’s led nail it’s hammered down by now, there ain’t nothing really holding it down because in this day and age everything is screwed in and the fixings are tight.

So if you got a led nail roof, seriously consider how you are going to fix that roof and in most situations the reality is a roof replacement, not all but most situations. Anyway, Dave from Queensland Roofing, hope that helps, thanks.

Leaking clips

Hey, Dave from Queensland Roofing, shooting a really tight video here at the moment because I need to bring you in to have a look at this quite closely. This is your tile roof but this is a little latch, a little hook that goes over from the timber work on your roof and it holds down the tile. It can be seen in a couple of different angles and you can see it here. It’s the same thing. This is looking down when a tile has been slid up on your roof. You can see this is holding onto the timber work and this goes up and over and hooks onto your tile. Now, the reason this can be a complication or an issue for roofs with this hook is because this problem here. If water catches on that hook it will run down the latch that it is attached to the nail that is known as the timber and boom! drips down, creates a patch in the shape of a circle. Why a circle? Because it’s like a stone in a pond, basically they drip, it drips down and then it spreads itself out, drips again, spread itself, drips again, spread itself out. So you get circular patches on the roof and it’s really easy to work out what’s happening when I walk into someone’s house and I see random patches, old little circle patches, and look, the unfortunate issue with it is, look, you’ll be told it’s maintenance, we end up having to strip roofs and re-laying them with a different type of clip. We can talk about that another day, but I want to get the point across this. You’ll be told that its maintenance and you’ve got to clean out the channels in your tiles, in between your tiles. When someone works out how to do that then we will be in a completely new industry but till then I’ve seen situations where clean as can be those hooks are still catching water and we have found no other way than to unhook that hook or to put a different clip in.

I better be careful what I say here because I know this upsets a lot of people and this is probably the most controversial video that I could possibly do. So I have to be mindful of what I’m saying, but I can tell you this. The proof is in the pudding and I have shot after shot, situation after situation where we take roofs off, we go through these roofs and we see directly underneath the hook, directly underneath, on hundreds and hundreds of different little patches, directly underneath the roof, where the hook is, where that nail is nailed into the timber there’s a leak and it’s not even a maybe where it’s coming from, we know exactly where it’s coming from but then there is this sort of confusion – is it because that the roof hasn’t been cleaned properly? Come on. Let’s have a look at how that sits there. Let’s be serious and have a look at how that sits on the roof. That hook sits right in between the channels of the tile. Now you’re telling me that the channels of the tile have to be perfectly clean for that hook not to catch water? That hook will catch water in heavy rains and that’s what there is to it. That’s the truth behind it. So, look, it’s something I’d probably want to speak to someone who’s got this in a bit more detail privately but I got to put it out there and say, if you have circular patches on your ceiling and you have a tiled roof this is the place we’re going to be starting. Thanks for that.

HOW TO MATCH NEW ROOF TILE TO OLD – Queensland Roofing

In today’s video, I’m going to talk about how to match roof tiles when they just won’t match. Have a look at the photo you see behind me. See these strange-looking tiles placed randomly over the roof? What’s happened is the roof that has gone out there, he said he can replace the cracked and broken tiles but when going to do so, has had trouble sourcing an exact match. He’s got the type but he hasn’t got the colour. See, replacing cracked and broken tiles can put roofers in a situation where sourcing an exact match is difficult. So what should have been done? Well, the tiles that were going to be replaced should have been replaced by current tiles existing on the roof. Those tiles are sourced from the very bottom row. The reason it’s sourced from the bottom row is because that’s the row that’s difficult to see from the ground. We replace the cracked and broken tiles with the same age and colour but then when we get the new tiles we put them out of sight. I’d love to show you what it looks like but there’s nothing to see. You can’t see the new tiles because they’re out of sight. That’s the whole point.

HOW LONG ROOF REPLACEMENT – Queensland Roofing

Today I’m going to do my absolute best to try and answer the question of how long it takes to replace a roof. The reason that some people tiptoe around the answer of how long it would take to put on a roof is because there are a few variables that need to be considered and the biggest one is how many people are going to be on site working on the job. We like to look at having a team that enables us to do the majority of the work based on the roof not being oversized or too big between one to two days.

Now taking into consideration we like to have the materials usually there a day or two before the job starts, on top of that we’ve got to put scaffolding or edge protection around the job site. That’s another day we like to have prior to the job commencing allowed for that scaffolding to go up. So, if you look at that, you could be looking at potentially one to two days of prepping the site, one to two days of taking the roof off and replacing with the new roof and then after that you’re looking at probably another day or two days again of the scaffolding or edge protection coming down, all the rubbish being removed and the final site inspection done. I hope that helps.

GUTTER GUARD TYPES – Queensland Roofing

In today’s video, I want to go through some of the experiences we’ve had with Gutter Guard and also why we believe there are so many different types on the market. One of the biggest reasons I believe there’s so many different types of Gutter Guard out on the market is because it’s a balance that’s never been found. One, a product that works and two, a product that’s affordable to the average homeowner. Past experience of installing many different types of gutter guard has taught us that while it might work initially it can cause problems down the track. Going back to a roof after five years can mean it’s difficult for us to access the gutter, difficult for access to the roof and sometimes even difficult to access the broken-down debris and matter that’s got through the grill of the gutter guard and now it’s sitting in the gutter. Where does this leave us? Well, one of the products that I believe is probably the future of gutter guard is a product called GuttaFilta. It is exactly that. It’s a filtering system that is used inside the gutter as a foam insert. The filtering allows the water to go through but stops the leaf matter on top. It’s fantastic product as a roofer because if we do need to work on the roof at a later date we can still access the gutter, we can still access the roof and most importantly it’s extremely affordable.

SCAFFOLDING, EDGE PROTECTION and HARNESSING – Queensland Roofing

In today’s video I just want to establish some clarification in relation to the safety of workers on your roof. Due to the fact that roofing is a job where we are often working at heights, we have to put a plan in place to make sure safety of our workers is considered. The three main things that you see when people are working on a roof is, one, scaffolding. Most people understand and know what scaffolding is, but it’s often confused with edge protection. Edge protection is simply a fence that goes around your roof so that should a worker fall they hit the fence. The third thing is harnessing. We can put harnessing in place where either scaffolding or edge protection is either too expensive or not necessary. As long as we can ensure that the safety of the workers, are not going to risk falling at heights, we have ensured the safety of the workers on your roof.
